went berry picking today in a misty drizzle, on sauvie island! was delicious & marionberry-flavored fun. baked a pie for our hosts this afternoon. we have been hanging out with them and their two little kidlets quite a bit over the last few days [to make up for the time lost last week when they were working and we were at death's door anyway and we all barely saw each other], which is always-chaotic fun fun fun. however, now mike and i are heading out on the town for some grownup time and happy hour [whew.....we are not used to being around little children, it is kind of tiring!]. only one full day left in portland! :(
the lesson here being, if you invite us to stay at your house, we will bake you a pie. a delicious, homemade one. and then you will most likely invite us back. hooked on our pie. ;)

2:28 pm - in which i am [hooray!] not yet dead..........

our bellies have recovered from one long day and two even longer nights pretty much spent fitfully writhing in a dark room on a sweaty bed, cursing the one [or more, perhaps] traitorous mollusk in an otherwise innocent-looking bowl of clams that was both of our downfall. it was hard to walk, everything ached and lots and lots of bad things came out, it was pretty medieval. it was a shame to lose an entire day of our vacation, but the worst of it is over now and we seem to have pretty much survived, so--yayyy! onward!! ;)
today so far has been spent pleasantly wandering the hawthorne district and putting together paintings for our hosts. tonight we are venturing out to beaverton to visit mike's friends, which should be amusing.......
just wanted to write and let you all know that i am not, in fact, dead of clam sickness. i sincerely hope that i never have to go through that again [it was my first food posoning ever, and the sickest i can ever remember being since the time when i was twelve and got strep throat in mexico....i am healthy as several oxes in normal life, and almost never even get a cold, so i'm always kind of shocked when something does take me down, and the experiences tend to be memorable......] but who am i kidding? i remain, as always, a fearless and intrepid eater, and so i am sure that it won't be the last time*. i'm sure anthony bourdain has had his share of food poisoning, as well. anyway, thanks all for your good wishes! :)
[ *let's just hope that it doesn't happen on the honeymoon, shall we?]

i am going to portland tomorrow!!!! hooray! what would you do, livejournal, if given eight lovely summer days in portland? we won't have a car, but we will have public transportation and most likely bikes. your thoughts??? :)

3:54 pm - [ in which big things are happening.................... ]

so, yesterday, we finalized our plans for the honeymoon [which have changed many, many times over the last few months in accordance with our fluctuating travel moods and budget], and we have a plan with which i can finally say we are both honestly thrilled. tickets are purchased, hotel is booked--13 whole days!! can't remember when i last was able to take such a long trip anywhere! here's where we're going.........[wheeeeee!!!!] :
.......blade runner land, aka hong kong!!!! we are going to eat dim sum and stroll the night markets and wander neon-lit urban mazes and take hikes in the green hills and walk on the beaches!
and we're going to see giant pandas! and pretty parks and temples! and this guy, the world's largest outdoor seated buddha!!
in short, i am pretty excited. can you tell??? it was reeeeeeally difficult to settle on one place [when you have a mental list of oh-my-god-places-i-have-to-go as long as each of us has, that is....the problem wasn't that we were disagreeing on where to go, more that we kept agreeing too well--'yeah, let's go there!! we could......no, wait, you're right, let's go HERE! or THERE!!!'], but hong kong is absolutely perfect. my first trip to asia! so many things to see and do in one place, and such a great travel partner to share them with.....that is the most important part. it is our honeymoon, after all. ;)

........aww, michael jackson, too?? admittedly i have mixed feelings on this. the man was if nothing else a tortured soul. but from a bystander's viewpoint, at least.......well, 'bad' was the first cassette tape i ever owned and it's always sad when a part of your childhood dies. :(
think i will just go watch 'thriller' again.

i think because i was so good at playing the game 'tetris' on our computer as a little girl, i am extraordinarily good at loading our dishwasher. rearranging the various caddies and compartments, placing large dishes and small dishes just so, maximizing the load potential while ensuring efficient washing of all dishes and utensils, and so on.
now, whether or not this is a skill of which i am immensely proud or not remains up for debate. sigh. ;)

so, i forgot to mention that my little livejournal celebrated its eighth birthday almost a week ago, on 5/20/09. wow!! it's hard to believe i've been rambling on and on about books, boyfriends, weather, accordions, angst and LOST for that many years already--my little el-jay is a second grader!!! wow.
happy belated birthday, el-jay. can't wait to see what you become in your adolescence. ;)

i think i am going to start collecting 'bad obama portrait sightings'..........i mean, it is just too easy!
this random thought brought to you courtesy of the new issue of 'art business news,' which gave me the idea with its not one, not two, but three bad obama portraits. score!! oh, and also the ENTIRE INTERNET, which is a fertile breeding ground of bad obama art, or 'obamart,' if you will. if you have seen any particularly egregious examples, PLEASE, join me by posting them here! ;)
